Rifle Scopes : Recommendations for Extended Eye Relief Scope?

So I went shooting with my wife and an old buddy, to try out his 7mm Rem Mag. My friend  has some battle wounds from years ago that never quite healed right (he survived being shot 3 times and has a titanium plate in his arm) so his ability to do some things like holding the rifle with the right amount of effort doesn't always pan out. To the point, on his first shot, the scope (which on him has about 3" of eye relief) came zipping back into his head right between the eyes. Well, I'm not sure how much blood he lost, but I'd guess it was close to a pint before we could jury rig a "Rambo" bandana made from what used to be one of his favorite shirts. I'll refrain from jokes about the scope drawing first blood.Image may be NSFW.

Anyway, we were all pretty happy he, and not my wife got to learn the magical lessons of eye relief. There's not much we can do about the way he holds that rifle - it's a miracle he can hold anything at all - but we can find him a scope with obscene amounts of eye relief. From what we figured out with a tape measure, it's looking like he needs 5" or more. The way he stock crawls for now, I don't feel comfortable with 4". He likes having a power of x4 and wants to be able to go out to at least x10 or more, but he's on a budget. I showed him a $180 scope and he was pretty optimistic, but the $1800 Leupold he saw next was outside the realm of possibility. I'm just going to guess "under $540" for that parameter.

I'm looking for better advice than putting a little 22mm pistol scope on his rifle, if you know what I mean.
