Perhaps we should clarify terminology.
Typically a "red dot" is a non magnifying optic with an illuminated red dot for an aiming point such as an Aimpoint.
With it powered off there is nothing "lit up"

You are referring to a scope with an illuminated reticle wherein it is a normal reticle that has the option to have a specific area illuminated . Most common is a small dot at the center crosshairs.

They can be helpful for placing a shot when it gets dark enough that you lose the reticle due to lack of contrast between the reticle and the target.

Unfortunately a lot of scopes get it wrong and the illumination is TOO bright even at it's dimmest setting and overpower the target.

Meopta does it right.
Their glass is very good too.

My personal experience:
I go back and forth on illuminated reticle scopes for deer hunting and I have several nice ones.
Personally as long as the glass is good and the reticle bold I could hunt deer well past legal time in Texas.

Now, with black hogs I definitely like a well done immuninated reticle.

I consider it a "nice to have" not a "need to have"

Hope that helps..
