Subject: Best Scout Scope for Long Range Shooting

Hi, all!
I recently acquired an M1A Scout,![Yippee]( "Yippee")
and am planning on mounting a scope on the Picatinny rail forward of the action. I plan to use the rifle for long range target shooting, and perhaps some hunting. I've looked into the Burris 2-7X scout scope, and learned that it is exactly the same as their 2-7X handgun scope. Since I'm not planning on using the rifle for CQB or any such, I'm wondering if the Burris 3-12X handgun scope would be a better choice, giving me greater reach at 12X than most of the variable scouts at 7X.
I would value opinions y'alls opinions on this choice, or do you know of a better one?
