So you want to compare these two- yes or no.  It all seems a little pointless since you capped the price at not over $500 but OK. VX3 has more recently had an upgrade in glass and coatings. The visable differences of course are the style of knobs and the gold ring on the VX3. Is there a difference in the erector system or the thickness of the tube - there could be but I do not have information indicating that however when I look at the 6.5 to 20x50 models it is quiet obvious that either the erector system is more sturdy or alternatively that the tube is thicker.  Does that make sense to you?  Now having owned both a VXIII 4.5-14x50 and the Mark 4 version I will say from first hand experience that there is a HUGE difference in the feel of the clicks on the elevation and windage adjustment. The Mark 4 is very crisp and positive clicks where the VXIII was shall we say sloppy - mushy - not a positive feel but still reliable and repeatable.
