With light transmission, a scope manufacturer may post say, 95% light transmission. Which their scope may do in a certain wavelength of the visible spectrum but not in the rest of the visible spectrum. The breadth of the useable spectrum may be much larger than where their scope reaches the 95% mark. A more accurate and useable statement would be to express the % transmission across the entire visible spectrum, or even better, that portion of the spectrum that is most utilized in a given scenario, I.e, animal color versus surroundings. I think some manufacturers do try to capitalize on particular color ranges in order to assist a hunter.

Make no mistake 95% by one scope does not equal to the 95% of another. Further, all the light in the world won't help you if the scope can't resolve the image. Resolution plays a big role in what people perceive as light transmission.
