Rifle Scopes : what rifle scope needed?

 I love my 7mm 08 and will take it to Montana. I did not think the caliber was big enough to hunt out there.

I always wanted to hunt mule deer and elk and thought I needed a big caliber rifle like a 300 win mag

Here 60 yd to 100 yd shot is a long shot. I've been told I would be shooting 400 yd to 1000 yd out there and the deer are much bigger there.

I never used a scope until a couple of years ago ( age caught up with my sight ) when I could not see my open sights. I know you can spend a lot on scopes. I paid about $400 for the Tasco scope on my 7mm 08 and it works well but not sure how a 3-9x40 would work there. I've been looking at some Leupold scopes but not sure what power to use.

I hunt Warren, Hamilton and Essex counties here in the Adirondacks. I have hunted out near Parish NY.  Oswego, stationed there in the USCG 73 to 74.
