You were told wrong. The vast majority of deer and elk are killed at ranges under 300 yards. I would recommend practicing to 300 yards and getting a rangefinder though.

Yes they are, but a good 140 grain bullet out of the 7-08 will knock them dead at 300 yards and in. Same goes for elk. Put it through the boiler room on a broadside target, and you will be good to go.

if you want a new scope for your hunt, by all means get one. Just make sure it is dialed in and you are confident with it before you head out. Then bring your Tasco as a back up.
