I'm a fan of the Talley LWs that you have. I personally don't like any mount that protrudes over the ejection port, though...unless of course it's a 1-pc base.
Maybe your particular Savage model requires LW mounts that are reversed like you had them; I don't know. That's just the first time I've seen them oriented like that, with the wider base in rear. I would call Talley and talk to Gary Turner. He's a nice guy; very helpful.
It's also possible that the rear of your receiver could be out of spec, with the surface your rear mount sits on too low relative to the front. That would angle the centerline axis of your scope upward, making it difficult to impossible to zero your rifle. If that's the case, the mounts aren't at fault, and you will have to shim your rear base.
Please keep us posted on what you find out.
