Subject: Thoughts on Minox scopes

I have a 2-10x40 Minox ZA5 which I purchased about 4 years ago for $510. I was using it on a Model 70 Winchester, .30-06 Grade II. Optically, the scope has high resolution and decent contrast. The scope has a little pincushion, optical aberration on the edges and eye alignment with scope axis is very critical or the scope blacks out the image.

Additionally, the scope is very difficult to use in really low light conditions, partially because of the scope axis criticality and partly from difficulty of aligning exit pupil which can be really challenging to find in low light conditions. These flaws make this scope essentially useless to use in really low light because of the difficulty in finding an image that the user's eye will properly align with.

Because of this, I have taken the scope off my .30-06 Model 70 and have mounted it on a Savage .22WMR which I do not use in low light. I would sell the scope but the used market value of the Minox scope is not worth doing because they are only worth about half of the new prices online.

For these reasons, I would rate this scope very low and I will not buy another Minox scope. For $500, one can buy a Zeiss Conquest which is a much better scope all around than the Minox for ease of use, quality of image and resale value.
