Your assessment does not make sense, to me.  If your scope center-line height is the "recommended" 1.5 in above bore, using a .308 with 168gr bullet at 2800 fps, at 300 yards drop is 4.2MOA, at 500 yards, 10.2MOA and at 1000 33.3MOA.  Same gun/bullet/velocity with sight height above bore 2.5 inches drop at 300 is 3.5MOA, 500 9.4MOA, 1000 32.4MOA, so approximately 1MOA difference (and to my way of thinking, to the good).  Just doesn't track...
