Some will notice it, some won't.  In a 4-12 power range, it should not make the difference in being able to take a legal hunting shot or not...  I would probably go for the 50mm, but that is just a personal thing and should not be construed as a recommendation.

Same scope inside as far as construction. Some feel the Bushnell series has better glass. I've owned both but never put one along side another so I could say for sure.

My oldest son is wanting a high magnification scope for LR shooting on his .223

He's leaning heavily towards the Zeiss Conquest HD5 5-25x50mm scope with the Plex reticle and locking turret.

I'm not familiar with this variable range, as I've only fondled and peek through the 2-10x42 and 3-15x42 versions.

Hows the ER and eye box? Easy to get behind (at all magnification ranges)? For the same price range, is there another scope he should be considering instead (not interested in ballistic, MOAR, mil dot, or christmas tree type reticles)?

He'll be using this specifically to punch paper, steel, etc. out to 800 yards.

Much obliged.

I am new to this forum so I'm sorry for re-hashing a thread that has been dead for quite sometime. Just thought some new dialogue would help me as well as others.
Shipping to S. Africa is not as complicated as it seems. Most riflescopes for hunting or target shooting can legally be shipped there with proper documentation. It is not difficult to aqcuire, only time consuming. It could take from 2 to 8 weeks to complete the process. It is my understanding that ITAR banned scopes are those that are manufactured to military specs and/or contain Gen II or higher night vision capability. It would be nice and would simplify things significantly if all manufacturers and/or distributors would compile a list of ITAR banned scopes such as these from Trijicon and Leupold.

http://www.leupold.com/resources/trade-compliance/

A big part of the problem is the manufacturers themselves. They don't want distributors crossing their established "trade zones" thus competing for the same business.

I discussed my likes and dislikes in this thread:

http://www.opticstalk.com/nra-convention_topic36749_post519117.html?KW=VCOG#519117

Basically, I like the form factor, "COG" integral mounts, battery housing, and apparent ruggedness.

I dislike the price; I think it's WAAAAAYYYY overpriced at full MSRP. I might consider it at about 50% of MSRP. The reticle also looked canted in the sample I saw.

Rifle Scopes : Greenhorn and a new CZ 527 bolt .223 scope?

I have 2 CZ527's, the .22 Hornet wears a Swarovski 3-9x36 in medium Warne rings, which needs the bolt knob ground down for clearance, even with the 39mm diameter ocular bell.
The second is in 7.62x39 and wears a Leupold VXIII 2.5-8x36, bolt handle not ground down and scope is in QD Warne high rings.
This is a small and quite dainty scope, but even so the bolt misses the scope by only about 1.5mm.
I also have a couple of sets of the factory supplied CZ rings, they are slightly taller than the high Warne's.
I would never again use the Millet* rings on any scope or rifle I own, any set of rings that can mangle a scope so easily should never have been made.
You will also find scope with long eye relief (like Leupold) cause more scope mounting issues than anything else on these mini Mauser actions due to the closely spaced bases.

If you like the Warne rings by all means stay with them and disregard the Millett.. Having read over your OP a couple times I think you would be very comfortable with the 1-4 Trijicon accupoint with triangle reticle. I recently acquired a 3-9 Trijicon with the green triangle and it is an outstanding optic. Being you are very comfortable with quick shooting with open sights the Trijicon will feel very natural to you when you shoulder the rifle. You also mention hunting coyotes and wolves. Now I don't know what your laws are in AB but in many States we can hunt dogs at nite outside of normal big game hunting hours. Once again the Trijicon moves to the front. While others may have different opinions I have found that it is quite easy to shoot very precisely with the tip of that triangle in the limited amount of shooting I have done with mine. If the Trijicon is just not in the budget you may also consider the 1-4 Nikon Monarch with #4 reticle or possibly the 1.75-6 Leupold VX3. I ran one of those on my AR for awhile before doing some swapping and selling to acquire some higher end optics and I can honestly say its one I should've kept. I had the heavy duplex which was great in low light but still thin enough in the center to be precise with.

To address your question of the variable eye relief. For the most part it will not vary more than .5in. It is certinally noticeable but not all that hard to get used to. Being you are mounting it on a 223 it is much less of a concern than if you were mounting it on say a 375 where the heavy recoil is an issue.

I see it's been about 6 months but how did the Z3 before once you got it back? I'm considering putting the z3 41 450 on my new mark v. I have a Zeus hd5 5x25x50 on my browning 30/06 & a leupold v 3 3.5x10x50 on a browning 264 win mag. Both scopes are extremely clear but the hd5 has the edge. Originally was considering just getting a 3x12x56 conquest.

How many of you guys have used a scope that has come from the factory with a dedicated turret or reticle?   Scopes like the M-223 or M-308 from Nikon, Leupold Mark AR scopes.  I get several folks that ask me about them allot.  My buddy wants to put a Leupold Mark AR on his bolt gun and is convinced he can just slap it on and it will be perfect drops and turret will match up fine.  He doesn't listen to reason about MV, BC and other factors but its his money.    Just curious if anyone had used one on a bolt gun and if so what results you experienced.

I've used a number of BDC scopes.  In general, they ALL have to be calibrated by shooting.  It is a "science project" to discover the "caps and lims" of any BDC scope.  I won't say you CAN'T just stick it on and start shooting "dead on" with it... I've seen it/experienced it (to some degree), but the odds are against it.  To fully "calibrate" a BDC scope it usually takes me a couple of boxes, sometimes more, of ammo.

I habe an ior that is turret calibrated to 55 grain fmj at 3200 fps. Out of my 16" they are notimg going that fast but out to about 400 yards its mighty close. A few yotes have found that out.

Anyone have one of these yet? Any feedback?  Looking at the 3-9x40mm 30mm tube model.  I have a couple Leupold CDS scopes and like the 30mm tube and price these C4 Plus scopes offer.

My train of thought is to get a scope with a turrent thats generic an make a drop chart and such or get a scope that can be fitted with a kenton industries knob.

Yeah its preference. The bdc to me is a fixed drop, but I shoot to fond out what distance those drops happen at. Dedicated ones will be pretty close but each rifle will have a spread anyways.

To me it really doesnt matter what the bdc is meant for, I just pick the reticle I like and make it work for my rifle.
