Rifle Scopes : Leupold vs Swaro vs Tract

I'm mulling over the following scope choices:
  1. Leupold VX-6HD 3-18x50
  2. Swaro Z5 3.5-18x44 (or the 2.4-12x50)
  3. Tract Toric 30mm UHD 4-20x50 MRAD
I'm going to initially mount the scope on a Cooper 25-06 but will possibly transfer the scope to my next "needed" rifle, a mountain elk hunting rifle that will *likely* be 300WM.

My considerations:
  • Budget - not a huge consideration but each of the above are just under $1300 (or less with Black Friday sales), except for the Tract (which is significantly less on sale).  If I hold this $ range constant, I'm looking for the best scope for the $, even though I might have a few uses for this scope
  • Each of the above have more than 5.5" of mounting space (long story - prior thread)
  • I have a Tract 1" 3-15x50 on a Cooper 30-06 and really like it (and the CS is amazing)
  • I'm not a fan of the Tract MRAD reticle and my favorite of the 3 is the firedot on the Leupold
  • The 2.4-12 is under consideration because much of my current use is Eastern hunting at relatively short distances, and maybe I *need* to get this and swap my current Tract to my future 300WM...
Thanks in advance for any input, and Happy Thanksgiving for those in the US!

I know nothing about Tract, donMt buy Leupold products, and have had great success with z5 and z6 hunters. I am a fan of swaro glass quality. Their scopes are robust and have been exceedingly reliable for me.

I think warranty is original owner only, so that is a consideration.

If that has changed, someone please correct.

No, Swaro’s warranty is transferable and always has been, at least for US customers.

There you go, transferable!

More support for Swarovski!

This is a little bit of an apples to oranges question since Tract Toric UHD 4-20x50 is a FFP precision-oriented scope (a very nice one, by tthe way), while the other two are SFP hunting scopes.

Optically, Swarovski is a little better than VX-6HD, but personally, in the current market, I will not spend that amount of money on a scope that does not have some sort of reasonable reticle illumination.  If you want a Swaro, step up to Z6i.

Otherwise, I would give a very close look to Meopta R2 2-12x50 or look aorund for the recently discontinued Leica Visus 3-12x50.

Thanks CBM.....great info.  I'm seriously considering a Hungary model fixed 8X56 with IR. Most of my shots are in the 70-100 yard range and I like the idea of a scope that is point and shoot. I also read they have a slight advantage in low light over variable scopes because of the fewer number of lenses. We'll see, if I don't like it I have plenty of other scopes to fall back on. I haven't ruled out a 2-10X56 SB with IR. Thoughts on these 2 scopes for hunting in the Low Country?

I use the Klassik and two Stratos hunting the same low country type terrain as you in Georgetown County. I have to pay attention to my watch most of the time as I can still see way past legal with any ambient light.

I’m actually picking up another one or two Klassiks to replace a few NF I have sold.

As Ilya says, Meopta very good value for money.

In my experience perhaps not quite very top quality glass as the German / Austria offerings but rock solid and precise mechanicals and a fair bit less money than the German / Austrian offerings.

Thanks ILya.  I found what appears to be a good deal on the Visus (about $1100), but just wish it was in matte instead of glossy.  Decisions, decisions.

For the hunting you are talking about, I can’t imagine anything better than a Klassik 8x56 with Illuminated reticle. I would probably choose an L3 reticle if it were me.

The Leupold 1.5-5x20 vx-3i is about the best scope I have ever used for all around usage, fast target acquisition, excellent low light ability and at least around New England a top magnification of 5 is more than enough. Very good rifle scope.

Great scope, but the only thing that would concern me would be if the FOV is good enough for the 70-100 yard range.

Sparky, that was my only concern. I rarely crank up past 5 or 6 so 8 is quite a bit. I would trade off some FOV, IF the fixed set up would afford me an extra few minutes to make an ethical shot at dusk.

If you’re hunting from a fixed position in a stand/blind where deer will be in a calm state most of the time, 8x is not too much for 70-100 yard shots, though in a fixed power scope, I would lean toward 6X instead. Below 50 yds or so, where a lot of shots are made at deer in the woods, 8x is a bit much IMO...doable, but I’d want a lot more FOV in the event you need to acquire a moving animal.
