Muskethead, the aforementioned Talley LW rings are excellent, and will withstand plenty of recoil, but keep in mind, they aren't steel rings as you requested; they're aluminum alloy.

However, they are every bit as strong as many steel rings because they have a wide gripping surface with 4 cap screws per ring, and there is no separate base + ring; they are integral and mount directly to the receiver without a separate base.

I concur with SVT also or you could use a Leupold Dual Dovetail system. I've used both systems, to me it boils down to personal preference.

The Leupy Dual Dovetail system is indeed very good as well, as it dispenses with the weakness of the traditional "Redfield" dovetail system -- the dreaded rear windage screws that provide a very weak connection. It also gives you the added flexibility of using any mfg's rings designed for the "turn-in" dovetail cam system, so you have additional heights to choose from, along with being able to use the Burris Signature rings with the self-aligning inserts.

Im in Argentina, South America. Here it is legal to import optics, as a matter of fact i have recently imported one from China, for a spring air rifle. I recently started to participate in Hunter Field Target events and wanted to upgrade to a better scope. SWFA 10x with side focus seemed a really good option i heard similar scopes where used in UK for HFT.

That is correct.

We cannot export, nor will we assist in exporting.

SWFA, only conducts business within the US.

+1.. I've run the signature rings in double dovetail for quite awhile now and I swear by them. One set is on a Kimber Montana in 338WM and they are great for rifles with firm recoil.. I generally just swear at windage adjustable bases...

humm --been w while since a peered through a monarch -- i would guess that the later monarch 3s  are probably better than a diamondback .

they cost a lot more than a diamondback , hell they cost more than some  vipers!

a better question would be does a monarch 3 out scope a  $299 vortex viper?

it seems like there was a  review of a bunch of middle-priced scopes a while back that had a bunch of popular 3-9x 40s in it.

I would hunt through a bunch of gunstores to find an old 1-4 or 4 power used Leupold.

Need a short to medium range scope for an AR 10 that will be arriving shortly.  Will be shooting primarily at ranges from 25-300 yards, so I think a 1x4 or 1x6 scope would fit the bill.  I've been considering the models offered by SWFA and Vortex.  I do own a couple of Super Snipers already and have always found them to be a good value.

I've also heard good things about Vortex, but I'm a little confused by their  different lines.  Looks like they have a high end Razor line and I love the reticle offered in their 1x6 model, but not the price.  Also have a lower end line that's actually a little cheaper then the SWFA.

I assume what I get in the high end Vortex is better glass and a more rugged scope.

What are everyone's thoughts on these three models?

Also, other mfg's I should be considering as there are a bunch of mfg that make similar models?  Leupold?  Nikon?  I see IOR also makes a line of scopes that would fit, and I do own one of their scopes that I found to be of high quality and a good value, but they don't seem to come up when you talk about 1x4 scopes.

I have three of these and I like them a lot but they are a bit more than the $200 you mentioned.

http://swfa.com/Bushnell-3-9x40-Elite-Rifle-Scope-P48262.aspx

I just mounted a Vortex Diamondback on my nephew's 270 and the glass is very impressive, scope and turrets seem rock solid and you get the vortex guarantee. Amazing for the money. The sole issue I have with the diamondback is that, to me, at higher magnifications the eyebox seems to be a bit sensitive to eye positioning and the eye relief seems to shorten up to shorter than the 3.3" that they publish. However, I have not read that from others so it could just be me. By the way, the Bushnell I mentioned doesn't have the longest eye relief either so keep that in mind if you'll be mounting it on a heavy recoiling rifle.

Talley steel bases and rings are very strong and the machining is precise. They look good too.

Yes, they are indeed strong. I like them and have several sets. They incorporate recoil shoulders in the bases, and as you said, the machining is very precise.

Some folks don't like vertically-split rings. I do like the clean look of Talley's vertically split rings, but I'm neutral on vertically-split rings in general from a functional standpoint. They're just a tad more difficult to setup and get the scope rotated so the reticle is square than with horizontally-split rings. I wouldn't hesitate to buy more sets in the future.

I run the Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24 on my AR and love it.  Good glass and nice crisp turrets.  The zero stop on the turrets is a nice feature too.

The reticle takes a little time to get used to.  It'd be nice if it was a tad bigger, but with a little time, you get used to it.

I have no experience with the other scopes you mentioned, but I've heard nothing but good things about the SS 1-4 & 1-6 power scopes.

I'd get the SWFA SS 1-6X24. I think it's a perfect AR scope.

The Vortex Razor HD 1-4X24 is fantastic as well. It would be my second choice.

I'd go with the SS 1-6X24 based on the additional magnification at the top end, the lower price, and the fact I really like the illuminated "Donut" reticle. I also like supporting my friends at SWFA, and they will take care of you from a CS standpoint, though Vortex is excellent in that regard as well.

Optically, those 2 scopes are probably very comparable.

Which would be better low light scope for hunting? I have older Swaro 3-12x50 and it is clear and heck of a low light scope but I want another for my 270 and was between the Meostar 2.5-12x56 with ill reticle or the Swarovski Z3 3-10-42. Or what other scope for 1k or less for best low light hunting.

I too recommend you try to find a Nitrex TR1 scope. Just goggle Nitrex TR1 forsale and you should find a few available for around less than 1/2 what they used to sell for. Recall their discounted price was around $130. Weaver handles the warranty on them. Own a couple of the Nitrex scopes myself and they are very nice. Made in Japan by LOW, who makes the higher end Bushnell, Weaver, Sightron and other brand scopes.
