The Z3 you mentioned is one of my all-time favorites. I have had zero low light concerns using it. You may also consider a 2.5-10 X 56 Trijicon Accupoint. I have not used the Meopta you mentioned.

Like the last poster said, the Bushnell Elite is a bit more than the 200.00 level.  With that said, even if I had a budget up to 500.00, I would buy an elite.  I think it is the best scope for the money in this category.

I own a Vortex Viper that is not as good as the Elite in terms of resolution or light transmission.  You mentioned the Diamondback, which is a step down from the Viper.

I think many people shy away from the Bushnell name, but again, I think it beats the snot out of anything under 500.00 and costs less than 300.00.

Ditto on the SWFA SS 1-6x.  I've used the Viper PST, and while I decent scope, not on par with the SWFA.

Ended up going with a SWFA 5-20X on my LR-308.  It is a SASS variant and intended to be my 600+ yard rifle.

Moved the SWFA 1-6x to my SPR AR and have no issues ringing steel at 600 yards.

I found because of the reticle design that I like the SS 1-6 either at 1 (very cool to have a zero-magnification view at close ranges) or at 5-6 but not in between. The donut can be distracting. While it's not fashionable, a good scope to consider for a .308 AR is the SS 3-9 or the SS 3-15. Either...with the even less fashionable (for an AR) fixed rings like Seekins .82" lows offered me the best cheek weld (using a Magpul CTR) that I've ever gotten without resorting to an adjustable cheek piece.

I run Talley bases and TPS steel rings.  They are traditional base and rings but they won't move! I had them on a Mark V .340 Weatherby for (5) years and they never moved!

Good Day,
One of your recommendation was to get a spare scope.
I did better; A Spare rifle/scope.

My Main rifle is a Savage Axis Youth 243, I LOVE this rifle.
So, I bought another one, and put a Nikon Buckmaster on it.
I ordered a Camo Dipping kit in Muddy Girl,
and: Voila !
What do you think of the final result ?

I have several Z3's and couldn't be happier with them (including low light). I have only one MeoStar but it isn't the 56mm. I am very happy with it as well but I think my Z3's are a little better optically (for my eyes that is) and VERY lightweight. For a hunting scope the Z3 is hard to beat period. Now if you want the illuminated MeoStar that is a different story. Both are very good scopes but the Z3 is the scope I always go back to because of the glass, low weight and compact size. Oh and the Z3 is very good with light transmission as well. Good luck with your decision.

A 56mm bell should out dual a 42mm for gathering light in low light situations. If you want it strictly for low light hunting get the 56mm, it you want an all around performing scope get the 42mm.

About the only complaint I can come up with for the 2.5-10 Predator is that when set on 10, the eye box is not forgiving.  On lower settings, even 8-9, it's pretty good, and on 2.5-6-7, it's extremely forgiving.  HUGE eye relief--- 4-5 inches.

BIG bright beautiful image, feels like you could run over it with a tank.  Edge to edge clarity.   Beats the Vortex Diamondback in low light, but I don't have anything high end to compare it too.

When it gets to be low light, the image through the scope is brighter than my naked eye ,and I can see details that I cannot otherwise see without the scope.  Is that good, or about average?  I don't have much experience with optics....

The fact that locations downrange are perceived "brighter" than your naked eye during very low light conditions is normal in my experience for quality optics.  I think that most good scopes will give you this effect to some degree or another.  The only way you can really compare low light coatings and associated low light performance is a side by side comparison with other scopes.

My Leupold 3.5-10 x 40mm VX-3 does the same thing, and I consider it a good scope ...... but it gives out before my 8x56 Docter binoculars.  They provide MANY more minutes of observation.  Of course I can't ever expect a rifle scope to match the low light performance of top quality, large exit pupil, binoculars like the Docters, but I am trying to work toward getting closer.

I'm hoping that tahqua will include some commentary on this when he posts his thoughts on the scope.

I'm waiting on my 3-12 X 56mm Predator Xtreme right now.  I bought it explicitly for low light performance, so I have high hopes along the same lines you are mentioning.  It may not be equal to top Zeiss models, etc, but if it can obtain 90%-95% of the low light capability they have for the deal I just paid ... I'll be pretty happy.

Looking for my first illuminated reticle scope. I have narrowed down to three:

Kahles KXi 3.5-10X50 1"tube, 4 Dot
IOR Valdata 2.5-10X50 30 M&M tube
Zeiss Duralyt 3-12X50 30mm tube, number 60

I am aware of the shortcoming of the Kahles which has the 50mm objective, but only a 1" tube. The IOR has the battery located on the wrong side of the scope for a lefty like me. The Zeiss has soft edges (from someone I respect) and issues at low power settings. The Zeiss reticle is fine.

I am also aware of the Victory Diavari on the Sample List, but not sure I want to go to that price level.

Choices, choices! Which one? I am leaning toward the Zeiss right now.
