Put this scope on my 308 and love it. It does what I want it to do can't wait to shoot longer range.

I second the SWFA mil-quad.  I have a SS 3-15x42 and the reticle is great at all magnifications.  In low light at 3x it is a tad thin but the heavy outer bars help get you on target and then you can zoom in a little if you like.

For exclusively low light, simple is better and I'd probably opt for an SFP rather than FFP.  For long range, I am a fan of the "Christmas tree" reticles: yes they may be busy, but the ability to place accurate and precise rounds without spinning turrets is a nice thing.

Add to that, when used at low power, the drop components are almost always unusable, but are also very non-distracting, they simply fade away - mostly.

Most of my hunting rifles also see long range work, so the scopes tend to be tactical scopes that do many things well.  That said, I have a few stalking guns, and they all wear SFP scopes and are always carried at the lowest power.  Seldom do you come upon a shot that requires lots of magnification AND very little time to set up the shot.  The converse is often encountered (short shots with little time and long shots withe plenty of setup time.)

Great points Mr. Aid.  I'm a big boy so I do my stalking from a blind.  That lets me have time to take a great shot and not be rushed.  Most of my hunting shots are inside 150 yards so it's drop dead simple for me.

This scope is comparable and is on sale at a great price:

If you like the Nikon, my guess is that you would like the Vortex even better. If you bought the Nikon from SWFA and it's unused, you can probably return it.

In that case, get an SFP scope with a large objective bell and good glass, don't worry about reticles, #4 works well for you.

The reticles in the SS scopes have been well thought out.

Rifle Scopes : Time to upgrade my scope

One of my favorite little rifles is my Savage 93r17 FVSS. I take it to the range everytime I shoot to plink with while I let the barrels cool on the bigger guns I am testing loads for. Because of its outstanding accuracy and how much I shoot it, it deserves a better scope. It currently wheres a take off Simmons 3-9x40. I want something at least 4-12x40 or maybe even 6-18x40. Don't want to spend a ton on it (<$300) but want to upgrade. Thinking something like a Vortex crossfire or diamondback, bushnell trophy or legend hd, redfield, etc....

Any suggestions?

10 x
I had thot I told the guy that I wanted a 6×42 mil dot ss scope. Somehow he heard 10×42 mildot. So that's what was in the box at the.p.o. yesterday and now is mounted on my 6.5 Creedmoor. I do wish it was the mil quad reticle or 6 x. But I want to shoot my rifle more. And actually as long as I understand the Mil Dot Master correctly items mil dot reticle will work fine.
I know that isn't a direct answer to your?
But yesterday when I was playing with it on the rifle I noticed I could see some mirage looking across the muskeg behind the house. But it wasn't overpowering.
It was in the mid 70 s. The scope was still extremely crisp, bright, clear and had good resolution. And I could put the cross hairs on 1/2" diameter limbs at 150 yards.

Hi all, newbie here.  I have made the mistake of buying the above scope 4-16x50 with the oblique parallax knob.  I can't for the life of me, mount it on any rifle I have.  I have tried:
Ruger M77MkII..no go, not even with a Picatinny rail, the scope sits too far
CZ452 22LR, no joy
Rem.700 as above...
Haven't been able to use it at all, any of you guys heard of the problem or have any suggestions?

Thank you
gb

Like many other manufacturers Vortex is evolving.  They are not discontinuing the entire line.

Although we are offering some excellent closeout prices on them right now.

While CTF's insight is great information. I personally like the 12X.

Overall it has very similar characteristics to the ten power without all the sacrifice of higher magnifications. Since the reticles are FFP, you will still be able to assess DOPE and Target estimation.

I would also add that since you are wanting to grow into shooting longer distances, that additional magnification could be a great benefit if you have aging eyes.

M8 I don't understand what you mean by " Scope sits to far"

Are you able to provide a photo that could better illustrate the issue that you are having?
