Rifle Scopes : Which Illuminated Reticle Scope

I like the Kahles the best out of those 3, however, it's also the most expensive. It has a great illumination system that's better than the IOR. Not sure about how its illumination system stacks up against the Duralyt.

With the current $100 rebate on the Duralyt, that's not a bad deal. However, I haven't played with the illumination system on the Duralyt, and don't know how it stacks up against the other illumination systems. I have a Duralyt, but mine is non-illuminated. Optically, Duralyts do have soft field edges and some barrel distortion at low power, but center field resolution is pretty good, and low light performance is excellent. Adjustments have a nice solid feel to them. The Duralyt is heaviest of the 3, but it also has 12X on the top end, if that's important to you.

The IOR has excellent optics, and is surprisingly light and compact by typical IOR standards. It's also the least expensive of the 3. It's a nice scope, but unless IOR has made recent improvements to its illumination, its illumination system isn't my favorite. It does have 1/4" more eye relief than the Zeiss and Kahles, which isn't much, but if this scope purchase is for a heavy kicker, every little bit helps. I'm not absolutely certain, but the last time I looked at an IOR 2.5-10, I seem to recall it having some tunnel vision on low power, which is annoying to me. I have their 4-14X50, and I like the scope a lot despite some shortcomings. Image quality is their strength, despite some weird mechanical design elements. I'm the least trustful of Valdada's CS vs. Zeiss and Kahles (Khaybes). I've heard mixed reports on IOR Valdada CS experiences -- some great, some not so great.

The above is in the order I would rank them.

HOWEVER...given the price of the Kahles, if possible, I believe I'd be awfully tempted to just up the ante another $300 and get the 2.5-10X50 Diavari w/ Illuminated #60 on the Sample List you mentioned. It's a fantastic scope, and it also has the benefit of LotuTec, which is really nice to have in wet weather. Optically, it will trump all 3 of the scopes above.

What Ted said on the Diavari…  well worth the price.

Rifle Scopes : Kahles vs. Z3

How does the Kahles CL 2-7X36 compare  to the Swarovski Z3 3-9X36 in quality of glass etc.? They both weigh the same but the higher power Z3 actually has a larger field of view at 3X than the CL has at 2X.
( 39' vs 27' ) I have the opportunity to pick up a like new CL for $150.00 less than I can get the Z3 for but I'm not sure how they compare and I like the larger field of view.

Though call, the Kahles 2-7x36 is an amazing scope especially when teamed with the 4a reticle.

If you like the larger FOV (and high power range) get the Swaro, you can't go wrong with either choice.

I love that little Swaro (have only one tho) but ... for $150 less, the Kahles would be great. Either would be an awesome choice.

Sounds like the 1-6 will really work well for you then. It is awesome having no mag at short range. And 6X will comfortably reach out to 300 or more. It's a high probability I'll be using one on my 6.8x43 AR, although short term I'll try the SS 3-15 I have on it.

You might be surprised at the reach of a good barrel even if it's short. I got ~2625 fps out of a 16" .308 AR barrel using handloads I was able to bring within a grain of my bolt actions.

Rifle Scopes : Tasco 4x18 scope?

Well, not sure I've seen the power range Tasco you've mentioned, but one of our more respected range members when it comes accurate rifles, reloading and just downright great shooting ability has a number of old Japanese higher power Tasco scopes on his rifles. Everytime I ask him about a Tasco, he'd bought it used off a dealers table in some gunshow.

Lets just say, he has nothing bad to say about them. Mind you, he does own some beter brand scopes that cost a heck of a lot more.

As for me, do own a couple of old Japanese made Tasco 3-9 scopes that were on some old used rifles I'd bought at a pawn shop. Nice optics in them and they still hold zero.

I think he's talking about one of those old 3/4 inch 22 scopes from the Jurassic Period.

Lee Harvey Oswald's Carcano had a magnificent 4X18 3/4 inch scope on it....Ordnance Optics Inc

When I bought my AH Kahles scopes new they were close to $500 some years ago.  Used I would consider $400 a fair price used now, if there is any such thing on European used scopes anymore.  They are usually over priced.

Some Zeiss (Duralyte to be specific) have soft edges.  Most Zeiss scopes do not!  I am with Ted on the Diavari, so what else is there to talk about?

cervus,
I just sent an email to Kahles requesting information on their current Helia KX 2-7X36 model. Specifically how it compares to the discontinued 1" models (AH, CL, etc.) and if it is or will be available in the US. I will post their reply when I get it.

Since the KX version was just recently announced, I don't believe anyone knows for certain and only Kahles can answer that question.

ADK, I look forward to hearing the reply you receive from Kahles.

Rifle Scopes : Scope for .308/ AR-10

I was looking for some input on some scopes for a .308. I have been kooking at some scope by SWFA. Most of the scopes are fixed power. The price are around $300 to $400 dollars. I will be doing some hunting with it and maybe a little range shooting. I want to be able to get out to about 500 yrds with no problem. Which power should I go with? The 6x42, 10x42, or the 12x42?

I'd recommend the 6X if you want to stay in that price point.  IF not I'd move up to the 3-9 or just a wee bit more and get the 3-15
